DARRIN HENSON

Born and raised in the Bronx,
New York, Darrin DeWitt Henson is a natural-born performer. He grew up
being influenced by the dancing and choreography of movie classics such
as “West Side Story” and “Grease” and leading actors such as John
Travolta.
With his facile athletic ability, Henson was able to learn dancing from
the streets. While still in his teens, Henson made his professional
acting debut on Broadway in the drama “Stand Up Tragedy” opposite Jack
Coleman and Dan Garity. He followed with the off Broadway play “Club
12,” a contemporary version of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” that also
starred Wyclef Jean.
Henson received his first professional job as a
choreographer from Castleton State College after receiving notice as a
student at DeWitt Clinton High School. In no time he was getting gigs on
videos and commercials and quickly made a name for himself in the dance
world. He solidified his success choreographing for an A list group of
artists including Prince, Michael Jackson, ‘N Sync (he choreographed
their award-winning “Bye Bye Bye”), Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez.
In 2000, he won an MTV Video Award for Best Choreographer.
Henson continued to stay focused on acting and in
2000 he was cast as a series regular on Showtime’s “Soul Food.” He
earned two NAACP Image award nominations for his portrayal of ‘Lem Van
Adams,’ a street hustler turned husband, father and businessman. The
series aired for five seasons.
The talented actor works incessantly these days.
His upcoming films include the Universal Studios drama, “The Express”
which opens nationwide on October 10. Henson stars in the film opposite
Dennis Quaid, Charles Dutton and Rob Brown. Based on the true story of
Ernie Davis, who was the first black man to win the coveted Heisman
Trophy, Henson portrays his mentor, football great Jim Brown. Henson
also recently completed a starring role in the futuristic martial arts
feature “Tekken,” which is based on one of the most popular video games
of all time. In addition, he is filming a leading role in the feature
drama “Blood Done Sign My Name.” Written and directed by Jeb Stuart, the
film is based on the true story of the Oxford, South Carolina incident
of 1970 when a black man was wrongfully killed and his white assailant
was acquitted.
Henson’s other acting credits include a starring
role opposite Queen Latifah in the HBO telefilm “Life Support” which
earned both Emmy and SAG Awards. His other feature film credits are
“Stomp the Yard” (which was #1 at the box office opening weekend), “The
Last Stand” opposite Anthony Anderson, “The Salon” opposite Vivica Fox
and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” which was recently released by Fox
Faith.
The multi-talented Henson added another award to
his mantle in 2003 when he earned the International Bollywood Award as
Best Choreographer, which he received at the Taj Mahal. His choreography
has reached the masses since 1997 when he released his Darrin’s Dance
Grooves and subsequently, Dance Grooves 2, on DVD. It is important to
him that people utilize dance as a means of both fitness and creative
expression.
Whether it’s acting, choreographing or utilizing
his business acumen, Henson excels in everything that he does. |
